KIM CHERNIN WRITER/EDITOR/CONSULTANT
As a writer, I have published 18 books in various genres: fiction, poetry, memoir, essays. I have been particularly interested in writing the kind of memoir that, although true, reads like fiction. All this has made me very familiar with the tasks and stages of creativity, and with the publishing process.
As an editor I have edited, among many others: Alice Walker; Lillian Rubin; Michael Rogin; Susan Griffin; Michael Lerner; Renate Stendhal; Catherine Galligher; Paul Belasic, Lise Weil… Here too, I have been working with a variety of genres—fiction, poetry, memoir, academic writing, sociology…
I am particularly skilled at developmental editing, from the very first emergence of an idea to its elaboration and development as a book. I also have a knack for taking a promising first draft and helping it find its achieved form. First drafts and second drafts require a distinctive type of creativity. Writing is made a good deal easier when this distinction is understood.
As a consultant I have developed a unique way to work with creative people. I don’t believe in writing blocks—there’s always something going on that needs to be understood when writing comes to a halt. And there’s often simply a question of word-fatigue that isn’t recognized or can’t be honored because of the drive to finish a project. I believe that writing is a form of play; it is our task to figure out what is keeping it from being playful.
